Mothering Sunday

Just as a gentle reminder, Mother’s Day is this Sunday!

Why is it called  Mothering Sunday?

Most Sundays in the year churchgoers would worship at their nearest church or “daughter church”.

In olden times it was considered important for people to return to their home or “mother” church at least once a year. So each year in the middle of Lent, everyone would visit their “mother” church.

The return to the “mother” church became an occasion for family reunions when children who were working away from home returned. (It was quite common in those days for children to leave home to work in service from ten years of age.)

The majority of historians think that it was this return to the “Mother” church which led to the tradition of children, particularly those working as domestic servants, or as apprentices, being given the day off to visit their mother and family.

This special day has now become a time when people give thanks to their mothers and offers an opportunity to express both love and thanks for the work that they do.

What special thing will you be doing for your Mum on Mother’s day?

What makes YOUR Mum so special?

Brand new 100 word challenge!

There is a brand new 100 word challenge prompt for you all to have a go at. I was VERY impressed with the amount of entries we had last week and the standard was very high indeed.

The prompt this week is quite challenging so it will be interesting to see what you write about!

Don’t forget to encourage your parents, grandparents and older brothers and sisters to have a go too (or to give you a bit of help, but not too much!).

Remember to use punctuation, connectives and good vocabulary. Think carefully about every word you write.

world thinking day

A girl in our class is part of a Brownie Pack and came in her uniform because today is World Thinking Day. She has 26 badges and here is an interview:

What did you have to do to get the Royal Wedding Badge?

Did different activities. We had a special party and wore our best clothes.

What did you have to do to get the Booklover Badge?

Each table had a different activity. Know how to look after a book. We had to make a bookmark. Why you should look after a book. How to read a book. She also had to take in her best book and say what it was about and what she liked about it.

Today is a special day…

We all know today as Pancake Day, but what other name is it known by?

Tomorrow also has a special name too. Do you know what it is?

Housepoints for correct answers!!
